December Nights 2014 in San Diego's Balboa Park

Wandering around December Nights is as close to a cold, wintry walk as San Diegans get.

For two nights this month, thousands of San Diegans will don jackets, hats and possibly gloves as they gather in Balboa Park for an annual holiday tradition.

Wandering around December Nights is as close to a cold, wintry walk as San Diegans get.

The festival will take place for its 36th consecutive year on Friday, Dec. 5, 3 to 11 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 6, noon to 11 p.m.

The best part of the weekend? Many will say it's the free concert featuring choirs and singers from all over the county. Others will rave about the food options at the International Village. Then there are those who take advantage of the free museum hours from 5 to 9 p.m. each night.

Whatever brings you in, you'll soon discover what so many people already know about the festival - arrive early and prepare to walk.

Here's a look at the map for this year's event.

Free parking can be found outside the San Diego Zoo. Those who don't mind paying may be able to find a space at the Village Place lot for $25 or the Inspiration Point lots for $20 but be warned - they fill up quickly.

If you opt for the $5 parking at Petco Park, there is a free shuttle offered. The same is true from the free parking lots at San Diego City College. Shuttles run 3 p.m. to midnight Friday and 11:30 a.m. to midnight Saturday.

There are dozens of acts booked for entertainment. See the performance times and locations here.

The festival, known to many locals by its former name "Christmas on the Prado," is expected to attract 350,000 attendees.
