Performer Info

American Idiot: Green Day's Grammy-Award winning hit album, American Idiot, has been transformed into a hit Broadway musical. American Idiot: The Musical started its production run in the Bay Area before taking its act on the road to New York and on Broadway. Now, American Idiot: The Musical, is coming to a venue near you throughout North America. Use Eventful as your source for American Idiot: The Musical tour dates and venue information.

Green Day was the '90s biggest punk-rock band with several multi-Platinum albums to their credit. However, at the turn of the century their star shone a little less brightly until they released their concept album, American Idiot, in 2004. The album spawned several hit singles, sold 14 million copies worldwide, and won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. American Idiot: The Musical essentially picks up where the album left off; with only a few more characters. Whereas the album focused on the fictional character, Jesus of Suburbia; American Idiot: The Musical tells the tale of three disaffected men and their journey to discover the meaning of life, through the musical guidance of Green Day.

Director Michael Mayer included a few new songs from Green Day's catalog but kept American Idiot: The Musical true to its namesake. Mayer also added very little dialogue to the musical as he felt that Green Day's material translated well onto the stage and was expressive enough to be conveyed without additional words. The show opened at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2009 and became the top-grossing production in the venue's history. American Idiot: The Musical was so popular that not only did its run extend in Berkeley but it was picked up by the St. James Theatre on Broadway in 2010. Billie Joe Armstrong made nearly fifty appearances on the top-grossing musical. American Idiot: The Musical was an instant hit on Broadway and it won two Tony Awards at the 2010 ceremony for Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design. In addition, the cast won a 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

Green Day's hit album has been enhanced visually and theatrically into a groundbreaking live event. Use Eventful as your source for American Idiot: The Musical tour dates and venue information.
